Noema

2013-15

An iOS app that uses voice to share thoughts, ideas & stories with the ambition to build a connected mind.

TOOLS

XCode, Objective C, Sketch, Swift

In 2013 my partner in crime Lars Laichter and I took on the most ambitious projects of our lives. We set out to create a new way of communicating online. The West has a strong written tradition and most of the internet stems out of it. At the same time our most intimate moments are during oral excahnges with our family and friends. There's something very personal about hearing someone's voice that text simply cannot replace. Another very important thing to notice here is that as the next billion people join the internet the need for voice based tools will be more important then ever before. The next billion people come from emerging economies where literacy rates are low and even more interestingly: it doesn't matter. Most of the East has strong oral traditions which the web needs to learn to support.

We spent almost two years working on Noema. During this time we were constantly learning about the skills neccesary to bring our idea to life and more about the business world. During this time we lived in Maastricht (NL), Prague (CZ) and Lahore (PK). This was also the time when we took a year off from school to focus on Noema full time. We experimented with many different ways of communicating with audio but a lot of the focus was on voice based mind maps.

We were trying to develop ways in which we'd be able to simulate oral conversations with multiple people using mind maps online. Thoughts and ideas would branch out just like a mind map. After two years of work we published an overly simplified version of Noema to the Apple AppStore. This version allows users to simply store their thoughts in the form of voice clips and access other peoples' thoughts in the form of an audio feed.
