Activism

2015

A campaign against cyber censorship in Pakistan that pushed the government to unblock YouTube after a 3 year ban.

ROLE

Concept, Script, Twitter Campaign

"Over the last few weeks I posted two videos regarding cyber crime & censorship. A draconian legislation was in the process of being passed in Pakistan at that time and freedom of speech was at risk. However I'm incredibly happy that because of some brave activists speaking up and a lot of people realising their rights, the government was forced into taking back the bill.

My partner (against crime?) for the second video, Nighat Daad, was also part of the expert delegation that was invited to the National Assembly for the "public hearing". The government setup a sub committee to fix the bill which is a first in Pakistan's history! To top it all off, yesterday Nighat was named as one of TIME magazine's "Next Generation Leaders" for her brilliant work against online harassment. The take away is simple: next time we find ourselves complaining about a problem, let's take it as an opportunity and do everyone a favour by solving it."
