"Asad J. Malik isn’t interested in making you comfortable. Under his artist name 1RIC, he’s using HoloLens to burst the comfy bubbles we sometimes immerse ourselves in..."

Augmented Reality artist & designer Asad J. Malik is of the view that the further development of virtual/augmented realities, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, gene editing and neuroscience will significantly alter the human condition in our lifetime. It’s our job to make sure that this radical technological change leads to radical socio-political change instead of maintaining the established order of societal affairs.

Asad was born a 5 minute drive away from the exact spot on which Osama bin Ladin was killed in Abbottabad, Pakistan. He started working with technology as a teenager, designing projects that gave young people a political voice.

In 2015 two FBI special agents visited Asad’s college in rural Vermont to interrogate him after he made an impulsive and risky trip to war ridden Libya. Although no charges were filed, the incident left him hyper aware of the complex political identity he inhabits. Since then he’s adopted the 1RIC pseudonym and has been working with Mixed Reality as a medium of expression. He’s been behind various MR projects like the viral Harry Potter Hololensexperience and more recently the Holograms from Syria project. 1RIC’s work has received international coverage and he’s on Pakistan’s 25 Under 25 list for tech and entrepreneurship. Currently he’s attending Bennington College for a personalized Mixed Reality curriculum.

A liberal arts student returning to school, a touring punk band, and a desi auntie with curry powder in her carry-on bag are randomly selected to be interrogated at an international airport. The common thread: their perceived Muslim identity. Inspired by project creator Asad J. Malik’s own inevitable connection with the brutal Syrian president for their nearly identical names, ASAD & ASSAD is an Augmented Reality interactive documentary that uses volumetric video to capture the wide spectrum of perceived Muslim identities.

Put on the Hololens and take a walk, stopping to meet holograms of numerous human beings of distinct identities as they are questioned by an unseen interlocutor. Watch and listen as these interrogations become startlingly intimate encounters between you and them.
